The text of this calligraphic work was composed by The Very Reverend Dr Ronald Selby Wright for Loretto School, Musselburgh . Perhaps he added to the first 4 lines that are attributed to the American Episcopal Bishop Phillips Brooks ( c1840-1893 ). The first 2 lines were almost used by US president John F. Kennedy when he quoted Revd Brooks but left off the ' and women' during a speech on 7th February 1963.

'Do not pray for easy lives.
Pray to be stronger men and women.

Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers.
Pray for powers equal to your tasks.

Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle
But you shall be a miracle.

Every day you will wonder at the richness of life
Which has come to you through the Grace of God.'
