Portrait of Marion Roberts Marion Roberts has lived and worked on Skye nearly forty years, painting landscape watercolours, the occasional oil portrait and illuminated calligraphy.

She and her husband, David L. Roberts, set up Orbost Gallery near Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye in 1977 and, while renovating Orbost House and bringing up a family, they both painted the landscape around them, Marion in watercolours, David in oils.

David died in 1997 and a small selection of prints of his oil paintings is available and can be found here.

Skye watercolour prints
The Cuillin from Ord

Enjoying the direct experience of painting outdoors Marion is able to respond to the sense of place and the light qualities of the particular day. She doesn't interpret the landscape or design with it but experiences and explores it in her characteristically wide watercolours. Using overlays of transparent colour she seeks to achieve an intensity of experience.

She enjoys detail and the calligraphic quality of the line and has a preference for painting into the light which heightens contrast and gives bold shadows. A vibrant tension is generated while sitting outside and painting as fast as possible in changing light, she paints what she delights in seeking to understand and to celebrate.

Calligraphy prints

Over the last 20 years individual pieces of calligraphy have been selected as worthy of reproduction as quality prints. Many are inspired by celtic culture, including celtic poetry and knot work. Others feature the works of inspirational poetry.

Marion's calligraphy prints can be viewed in a gallery here.
